Special Message From John Moore...

It’s almost that time of year again. The winter has been slow for most of us when it came down to fishing. Many where hunting or just taking the time to kick back and relax. Other’s were getting all their ducks in a row by replacing all the stuff they broke, lost, or just replenishing the tackle box or purchasing that new secret weapon. Ole Santa may have been good to some and the others are hiding what they didn’t get on the wish list from their significant others. This is a tough situation, because it is a direct conflict of interest for most of us. If we had gotten what we all had on our wish lists, then there comes the needed time to use all that stuff. This time and money issue is really tough, because if we take too much of either or both, then you know that there maybe a change of address namely “The Dog House” that may come into play for a few days and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Spring is just around the corner, with improving weather conditions and a better fishing environment, at least until the skeeters come out. The water will be warming up and the bite will heat up also. There have been some nice fish caught throughout the winter. On 2/24/06 Kenneth Hubbard and Micheal Blanks brought in a 49.68 pound blue and Joey Hicks weighed in a close 49.52 pounder. This fish took the lead in Weston’s annual Catfish Tournament. These will be a tough weights to top even though it was caught so early in the year. I just happened to be at Weston’s when it came in and got to weigh Kenneth‘s fish. It was a nice fish that was caught on a tough cold and windy day, and after it was weighed it was released back into the lake in great condition. These guys started the year off with a bang and there will be a lot of others who will be out there bending a pole when the news gets out.

Buggs Island Bait and Tackle just got in a bunch of new inventory this week to fill up the new store. Rusty Rutledge became the sole owner a few weeks ago. Stan and Rusty had been together for several years and he will surely be missed. I stopped in and gave the new 2006 season flyers out. We have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks to get ready for 4/22 when we break the ice on a new season. Bobcat’s is stocking up with all those goodies we love to sneak into our tackle boxes. The store was added onto a couple years ago and new boat storage sheds have been built also.

Weston’s Grocery had a busy winter with all the hunters and field trials in the area. They will be stocking up on the tackle soon also. This has always been a hot corner as the weather starts warming up in the spring and throughout the fall. Come on by and catch up on the latest catfishing news in these parts.

We have a new tournament trailer for the showdown and will be getting the graphics and advertising put on it soon. We would like to invite any businesses that would like to take the opportunity to put their ad on the trailer. We also have a great website that is just itching to grow. This site will be getting a lot of traffic in the future. Traffic is steady and growing on it and for the most part a lot of our tournament members haven’t gotten the news or a chance to use it. It is a big site and has a ton of room to grow. So come on out and
grow with us. Check out the site and don’t forget to log on the catfish talk forum. It was built for us to enjoy!

Tightlines and screaming bait clickers!!!

4.Catfish Cooking

Catfish Lafitte

INGREDIENTS:
2 eggs
1 cup milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons salt, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons ground red pepper, divided
4 (6 ounce) fillets catfish
vegetable oil
12 unpeeled, large fresh shrimp
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1/4 cup white vermouth
2 cups whipping cream
1/4 cup chopped green onions, divided
2 teaspoons lemon juice
3 slices thinly sliced cooked ham, cut into strips
Garnish: lemon wedges

STIR together eggs and milk.

COMBINE flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper in a shallow dish.

DREDGE fillets in flour mixture; dip in milk mixture, and dredge again in flour mixture. Pour oil to a depth of 3 inches into a Dutch oven; heat to 360 degrees. Fry fillets 6 minutes or until golden; drain on paper
towels. Keep warm.

PEEL shrimp, and devein, if desired.

MELT butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add shrimp and garlic, and cook, stirring often, 3 to 5 minutes, until shrimp turn pink. Remove shrimp, and set aside, reserving drippings in skillet. STIR vermouth into reserved drippings; bring to a boil, and cook 1 minute. Add whipping cream, 2 tablespoons green onions, lemon juice, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and remaining red pepper; cook, stirring often 12 to 15
minutes or until sauce is thickened.

ARRANGE catfish on a serving plate, and drizzle with sauce. Top with shrimp and ham; sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons chopped green onions. Garnish, if desired.

5.Catfish Tips

Locating The Early Spring Hawgs

Most catfish congregate near channel features different from the norm-brushpiles, points jutting into a dropoff, adjacent humps, stump fields, dead snags, pockets cutting into the bank. Big cats seem to prefer deeper water at the base of channel ledges (if oxygen levels are adequate) but also gather in the outside turns of channel bends, near junctions of two or more channels, and on deep channel edges in or near dam tailwaters.

Humps on stream and lake bottoms are also hot spots for early-bird catfish. They provide quick travel routes between deep and shallow-water haunts, and the tops of humps attract schools of shad and other baitfish, which in turn attract hungry cats. Catfish hold in deeper areas around the hump during bright sunny days, but at night and on cloudy days, they move into shallower reaches to feed. When a bite is on, fishing a hump in winter can produce catfishing action
far better than anything you ever imagined.
Deep channels beneath bridges, deep-water chutes around river islands, long timbered points jutting into deep water, potholes adjacent the deep end of river wing-dikes, lock-wall edges and tributary mouths-these, too are among the many areas where early spring catfish wait.
