Hi !firstname,
Welcome and thank you for subscribing to The Catfish
Showdown Newsletter. Hey all you Catfish Showdown
fishermen and fellow catfishermen. We are going
into our 3rd tournament this season on 6/23 with a
lot of momentum from last month. We reached 100 boats
with 224 fishermen in May, bringing us to 190 boats
in 2 events for the season thus far.
The water levels are good for this weekend and
hopefully the bite will be awesome Saturday night!
Congradulations to Bubba Melton and his dad for
the win last month and all the others who placed
and came out to fish. We had a great turnout!
This time of year late evening storms are common
while up the rivers and out on the lake. There are
possible weather concerns this weekend, so extra
planning and precautions are necessary to make a
night of fishing as safe and tolerable as possible.
So don't get caught off guard by mother natures
little surprises.
These storms can move in quickly and bring high
wind, lightning and even hail. If you are up in
the rivers you can usually get a little protection
but, storms can come up without much warning!
So if you are on the water when weather issues
arises, always make safety for you and fellow
fishermen your #1 priority. I have had all of the
above take place while on the water and I can say
from first hand experience that you will have your
hands full with the elements!
Be careful at all times especially when bad weather
is in the forecast. Have a plan to make your night
of fishing a safe one.
On a more serious note - a couple Saturdays ago one
of our fellow fishermen and his wife planned a little
family day, starting off with breakfast at a local
restaurant following it up with some good ole bream
fishing.
Carl Weston and his wife Iris who have been avid
Showdown supporters and anglers were cut short of
their little trip in a near fatal accident less
than a mile from the restaurant. While traveling
through Barnes Junction heading north on hwy 15
they were struck in the side by a car that failed
to stop at the intersection.
It was a bad scene and it was a miracle that we
didn't lose two of our close friends and fellow
fishermen that day. Certainly, angels from above
were there for them. I visited them on Saturday
at home and I must say that they are getting better
and are in good spirits. They were overwhelmed by
the support of family, friends, community and fellow
fishermen.
A few days ago a BBQ was held for them to help with
family and medical expenses. There are more events
scheduled in the near future for them. Here are a
few that are in the works, Benefit fishing tournament
on 6/30, Car Show and Shad-Tek 2007 seminar @ The
Pizza Pub in Clarksville.
More info will be available on these events and more
here on the Showdown site or you can call Weston's
Grocery @ 434-735-8106, just ask for Warren.
This family has a long road to recovery and any
support will be most appreciated. Let's come together
as family, friends and fellow fishermen to help ease
this families struggle so that the road to recovery
will be a quick and blessed one!
Come on out This Saturday and join us for another
catfishing good time!

Cooling Tips- How to save energy and stay cool
While most of the United States is under a
heatwave, other locations around the globe are
feeling the impact of high costs regarding
utilities.
What I'm about to give you, is from 33 years
experience of HVAC (Heating Ventilation & Air
conditioning) in the residential, commercial and
Industrial construction trade.
Heating and cooling your home uses more energy
and drains more energy dollars than any other
system in your home. Typically, 44% of your
utility bill goes for heating and cooling. What's
more, heating and cooling systems in the United
States together omit over half billion tons of
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year,
adding to global warming. They also generate
about 24% of the nitrogen oxides, the chief
ingredients in acid rain.
No matter what kind of heating, ventilating, and
air conditioning system you have in your house,
you can save money and increase comfort by
properly maintaining and upgrading your
equipment. But remember, an energy efficient
furnace/air conditioner alone will not have as
great an impact on your energy bills as using the
whole-house approach. By combining proper
equipment maintenance and upgrades with
appropriate insulation, weatherization, and
thermostat settings, you can cut your energy
bills and your pollution output in half.
AIR CONDITIONERS
It might surprise you to know that buying a
bigger room air-conditioner unit won't
necessarily make you feel more comfortable during
the hot summer months. In fact, a room air
conditioner that's too big for the area it is
supposed to cool will perform less efficiently
and less effectively than a smaller, properly
sized unit.
This is because room units work better if they
run for relatively long periods of time than if
they continually switching off and on. Longer run
times allow air conditioners to maintain a more
constant room temperature.
Sizing is equally important for central
air-conditioning systems, which need to be sized
by professionals. If you have a central air
system in your home, set the fan to shut off at
the same time as the cooling unit (compressor).
In other words, don't use the system's central
fan to provide circulation, but instead use
circulating fans in individual rooms.
MAXIMIZE COOLING
¤ Whole-house fans help cool your home or
apartment by pulling cool air through the house
and exhausting warm air through the attic. They
are effective when operating at night and when
the outside air is cooler than the inside.
¤ Set your thermostat as high as comfortably
possible in the summer - especially during very
hot days. The less difference between the indoor
and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall
bill will be.
¤ Do Not set your thermostat at a colder setting
than normal when you turn on your air
conditioner. It will not cool your home or
apartment any faster and could result in
excessive cooling, and therefore, unnecessary
expense.
¤ Consider using an interior fan in conjunction
with your window air-conditioner to spread the
cooled air more effectively through the rooms
without greatly increasing your power usage.
¤ Do Not place lamps or TV sets near your air
conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses
heat from these appliances, which can cause the
air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
¤ Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning
units, but not to block the airflow. A unit
operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less
electricity than the same one operating in the
sun.
PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS
¤ You can save as much as 10% a year on your home
heating and cooling bills by simply turning your
thermostat back 10% to 15% for 8 hours. You can
do this automatically without sacrificing comfort
by installing an automatic setback or programmable
thermostat.
¤ Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust
the time you turn on the heating or air
conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. As
a result, you don't operate the equipment as much
when you're asleep or when the house or part of
the house is not occupied.
¤ Programmable thermostats can store and repeat
multiple daily settings (six or more temperature
settings a day) that you can manually override
without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly
program.
WINDOWS
Windows can be one of your home's most attractive
features. They provide views, day lighting,
ventilation, and solar heating in the winter.
Unfortunately, they can also account for 10% to
25% of your utility bill. During the summer,
sunny windows make your air conditioner work two
to three times harder.
¤ Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds
to reflect heat away from the glass window on the
house or apartment. Close curtains on south and
west facing windows. Apply sun-control films on
south-facing windows to reduce solar gain.
MISCELLANEOUS
¤ Clean or replace filters once a month or as
needed. Seal and/or insulate all ductwork
associated with the system. Keep your fireplace
(if any) damper closed. Caulk cracks around
windows and doors. Use fluorescent lamps which
are much more efficient than incandescent bulbs
and last 6 to 10 times longer. Turn off lights in
any room you're not using. Open windows when
possible to ventilate at night.
These are fundamental and basic energy saving
tips you can do to live in a cool comfortable
environment while operating your cooling system.
By working all these principles, and staying
cool during the "Dog Days" of summer, you'll be
saving energy at the same time.

4.Catfish Cooking
Pan Cats With Beer
2 lbs catfish fillets, 3 to 5 ounces each, 1/2" thick
1 Cup milk
1/4 tsp. salt
Remove any skin or membrane from fillets and combine
with milk and salt in a gallon sized zip lock bag.
Refrigerate 2 hours, turning occasionally.
1/2 tsp Lawry's Seasoned Salt
1/2 tsp Lawry's Seasoned Pepper
1/2 tsp. dried thyme
1 Cup cracker meal
1/4 Cup Parmesan cheese (optional)
Drain the fillets and toss with seasoned cracker meal
in another zip lock bag, a few at a time, until well
coated.
Fry breaded fillets in a heavy frying pan with a few
tablespoons of peanut oil that has been allowed to
heat over medium high heat for 5 minutes. Takes about
3 minutes per side, until golden.
At this point, make up a batch of hush puppies in the
left-over oil. Half pancake mix and half yellow cornmeal
makes a good mix, with a few tablespoons of sugar, and
just enough buttermilk to bind. Form them into 1" balls
and fry, turning carefully till golden brown then drain
along with your catfish.
Wipe out the frying pan and arrange your catfish in one
layer. If desired slice several button mushrooms over fish,
and add 1 cup of warm beer. With your heat on low, cover
the pan and cook an additional 5 minutes. If you want some
gravy, remove the catfish and mushrooms, and add 1/4 to 1/3
cup instant mashed potato flakes. That may sound weird but
it makes a darned tasty gravy!

5.Catfish Tips
Big flatheads - Where to catch them at Buggs Island!
Rivers:
- Look for an area that supports a steady flow of water
with a bottom of gravel or hard mud.
- locate a pothole on the river bottom, a shallow flat
or drop off near the mouth of a tributary or the upstream
side of a underwater hump.
Lake:
- Find cover around fast-breaking structures.
- Seek out areas where there are steep rocky ledges and
tree cover or timber.
Finally, use live bait - the bigger the better. Flathead
feed nocturnally, and use heavy tackle.
